History
Dance Houston
was founded in 2003 to raise awareness and support of dance in and around
Houston while making it more accessible for the general public. We are
best known for our popular dance festivals that feature 10 - 12 local
dance companies in a
single performance.
In the past seven years, Dance Houston has become one of Houston's most
beloved dance organizations. We have sold out concerts at The Wortham
Center, The Hobby Center, and St. John's School; and we've regularly
offered free events at Discovery Green and Ripley House. Our
concerts last year provided four thousand people the opportunity to see
forty different dance companies perform hip hop, ballroom, contemporary
and cultural dances.
Our proudest accomplishments
are those of our dancers. Phillip Chbeeb, a hip hop dancer we
discovered in 2006, made it to the top 12 on So You Think You Can Dance
and toured the nation with the show. The dancers of So Real Cru, who
had been performing with us since 2006, won 2nd place on America's Best
Dance Crew. Dawn Dippel, one of our star performers since 2007,
was named "Top 25 Dancers to Watch" in the nation by Dance Magazine, the
leading publication on dance in the United States.
Dance Houston has brought
unparalleled diversity to the field of dance education. Through
partnerships with HISD and Texas Children's Health Plan, we give children
culturally significant learning experiences at low or no cost. Our summer camps
have given aspiring young dancers the opportunity to learn a wide variety
of dance styles from our star dancers.
In 2009, Dance Houston's
Founding Director, Andrea Cody, was selected to serve on the showcase
selection committee for the Dance/USA 2009 National Conference. In
2010, she was awarded by the Jewish Community Center for her contributions
to the dance community through her work with Dance Houston. |
